In order to study this phenomenon, a special research lab, the Trieste, has been built eight miles under the sea’s surface. It may just be the key to eradicating the ’Gets. But now, far below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, deep in the Mariana Trench, an heretofore unknown substance hailed as “ambrosia”’-a universal healer, from initial reports-has been discovered.

Then their bodies forget how to function involuntarily…and there is no cure. It causes people to forget-small things at first, like where they left their keys…then the not-so-small things like how to drive, or the letters of the alphabet. But this is a well-written (and gut-wrenching.literally) coming-of-age story, even if it’s buried deep inside a writhing, pulsing, bleeding nightmare. The Deep by author Nick Cutter NICK CUTTERĪ strange plague called the ’Gets is decimating humanity on a global scale. Don’t get me wrong - it’s *disgusting.* And decidedly not for animal lovers (I had to skip over a few key scenes, #noshame). Unfortunately for everyone involved, a mysterious visitor infected with something deeply sinister washes up on shore, and things go downhill, fast.Īlthough I’ll be sending the author the bill for my next therapy session, I will say that I really enjoyed this one. It’s supposed to be a fun-filled few days of survival techniques and bonding and whatever else you do when you don’t have your phone or wi-fi.

This horror novel drops us onto a small, remote island off the coast of Canada, where a Boy Scout troop and their lone adult leader have been left to fend for themselves for the weekend. The funny thing about Nick Cutter is, you can be marveling over his beautifully-bleak observations about the human condition, or the phenomenal way he puts together sentences, and then a page later you’re considering throwing your book across the room rather than finish reading one of the grossest, goriest scenes you’ve ever encountered.
